Lords Finance Bill Committee to hear from tax experts

The House of Lords Committee on the 2014 Finance Bill will hold two evidence sessions on Monday 27 January with experts on tax issues and campaigners on corporation tax

The Committee will take evidence from 3.35 pm from:

  • Malcolm Gammie QC, who specialises in tax law.
  • Judith Freedman, Professor of Tax Law at Oxford University.
  • Chris Sanger, Tax Policy Forum.

At 4.30 pm the Committee will then hear from:

  • Richard Murphy, founder of the Tax Justice Network which campaigns against corporate tax avoidance.
  • Richard Brooks, author of The Great Tax Robbery.

The evidence sessions will take place in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.

In both sessions the Committee will focus on the taxation of partnerships and whether it is appropriate that all partnerships, which can vary from small family businesses to large multinational companies, are treated similarly for purposes of taxation. Areas of questioning will also include the impact of the government's 2010 reforms to tax policy making, and whether enough is done to monitor the impact of tax changes post implementation and how successful the government have been in reducing aggressive tax avoidance.

The session will be webcast at www.parliamentlive.tv and is also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
