Lords probe EU relations with Russia
A House of Lords Committee looking into the relationship between the EU and Russia will tomorrow hear from regional specialists.
The House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on External Affairs will, on Thursday 17 July, ask the Eurasia Group and the Centre for European Reform about the gradual decline in EU/Russia relations, the new Eurasian Economic Union, and the implications of Russia's current foreign policy for the EU.
The Committee will hear from Mr Alexander Kliment, Director, emerging markets group, Eurasia group, via video conference, and Mr Ian Bond, Director of Foreign Policy, Centre for European Reform.
Areas the Committee may cover include:
- What's caused the recent decline in relations between the EU and Russia?
- How can the EU play to its strengths and weaknesses in its relations with Russia?
- What are Russia's relations like with other bodies such as NATO and the UN?
- How has Russia engaged with the WTO and is it abiding by its WTO obligations?
- What are the implications for the EU of President Putin's ambitions for the Eurasian Economic Union?
- How efficient is the EU in dealing with Russia?
The evidence session will start at 10.05 am on Thursday 17 July in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
