Lords Constitution Committee to question President of the Supreme Court
The House of Lords Constitution Committee will this week take evidence from Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, President of the Supreme Court, and Baroness Hale of Richmond, Deputy President of the Supreme Court, in their annual evidence session on the role and work of the court.
Lord Neuberger and Baroness Hale will give evidence from 10.30am on Wednesday 25 June in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
Areas the session is likely to cover include:
- Has the right balance been struck between the separation of the executive and the Supreme Court?
- Does the court have an appropriate budget and level of staffing?
- What steps could be taken to improve the diversity of the Supreme Court as its membership changes?
- How should the composition of the Supreme Court change if Scotland becomes an independent country?
- How in practice does “dialogue” between the Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights work?
- Has the fact that the current Lord Chancellor is not a lawyer had an impact on his relationship with the Supreme Court?
- Is there an inherent conflict between the roles of the Lord Chancellor and the Secretary of State for Justice?
- Do changes to legal aid inhibit citizens' access justice in a way that affects the principle of the rule of law?
