Lords to debate TTIP, described as a "once-in-a generation trade opportunity"
The House of Lords will next Tuesday, June 17, debate the report on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment partnership (TTIP) by the Lords EU Sub Committee on External Affairs.
The report identified the gains, potentially enormous, from the EU/US trade deal, but also warned of the challenges ahead in making it happen, and the real risk of letting the opportunity slip away.
Lord Tugendhat, who chaired the Committee, will open the debate.
Lord Livingston of Parkhead will respond for the Government.
Commenting ahead of the debate Lord Tugendhat said:
“The Committee found that TTIP has huge potential to generate both trade and investment on both sides of the Atlantic. But the timing of the deal is going to be critical, and we will be urging the new EU Commission, responsible for conducting the negotiations on behalf the EU, not to waste any time in making it happen. The Committee also believes that the UK Government needs to generate an appropriate level of awareness of the sheer scale of the benefits, and actively sell this deal to the public and small businesses. This debate will be a good opportunity to remind the Government of the important role they will have to play in making the deal happen, and of the overall urgency involved.”
