Lords ask if digital economy is being let down by careers guidance

On Tuesday 11 November the House of Lords Digital Skills Committee will ask how well careers guidance and apprenticeships are serving the future digital economy.

The Committee is investigating information and communications technology, competitiveness and skills, and next week will turn its attention to careers advice and whether it is effectively preparing the future workforce for the booming growth in digital jobs. The Committee will also ask what changes need to occur within the current system of apprenticeships in order for them to support the rapidly changing work landscape.

At 10:15am on Tuesday the Committee will hear from Chris Jones, Chief Executive Officer, City & Guilds; Martin Hottass, Manager, Skills & Siemens Professional Education, Siemens; and Sue Husband, Director, Apprenticeships and Delivery Service, Skills Funding Agency.

Questions they will face include:

  • Is the infrastructure of skills delivery working across the piece?
  • How can apprenticeships and careers guidance best meet the needs of the future workforce?
  • Does careers advice need a complete re-think?
  • Are there enough tech apprenticeships?
  • How can we support people of all ages through apprenticeships or other training?
  • Should industry play a greater role in careers guidance?
  • Are apprenticeships flexible enough to adapt to changing digital careers?
  • How can more of them be encouraged?
  • How can more girls be encouraged to take computing subjects at school?

The evidence session will take place in Committee Room 2 on Tuesday 11 November starting at approximately 10:15am.

The sessions will be webcast at www.parliamentlive.tv and are also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
