Lords Committee to investigate sustainable marine economy

The House of Lords EU Committee will this week hear from a Government marine regulator, as well as representatives from the Crown Estate, as part of its focus on ‘blue growth', the long term vision for the marine economy.

On Wednesday 26 November the EU Committee responsible for agriculture, fisheries, environment and energy will continue its inquiry into EU regional marine co-operation.

The Committee will take evidence from Dr Dickon Howell, Director of Marine Development, Marine Management Organisation, Susan Kidd, Marine Planning Manager, the Crown Estate and Dermot Grimson, Head of Strategy and Policy, the Crown Estate.

The session will cover a number of areas including:

  • What role does the blue economy play in the UK?
  • What are the areas of tension between blue growth and marine conservation?
  • Is there too much red tape putting off potential economic growth?
  • What tensions are there among regulators of marine activities, such as yourselves?
  • What about tensions between users of the marine environment?
  • How important are concepts such as spatial planning in the region?
  • Should the UK or EU adopt some sort of North Sea strategic vision?

The evidence session will start at 11:00am and be held in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords.

The sessions will be webcast at www.parliamentlive.tv and are also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
