Should government continue to support childcare? Lords to question Minister
In the final evidence session of its inquiry, the House of Lords Committee on Affordable Childcare will question Sam Gyimah MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Education, on Wednesday 26 November.
The Committee has heard from academics, providers' organisations, parent groups, child poverty charities, employers, local government, and professional organisations and unions representing the childcare workforce. In this session, the Committee will be pressing Mr Gyimah on:
- the Government's aims in supporting childcare;
- how child development aims are balanced against maternal employment;
- whether current policy can deliver on child development without further investment in quality;
- whether there is any evidence that support for childcare has increased parental employment or generated revenue for the Exchequer;
- whether there is sufficient justification for the Government to continue the policy; and
- what evidence there is that schools are willing and able to expand their provision of early education for 2, 3 and 4 year-olds.
The evidence session will take place on Wednesday 26 November at 10.40am in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords.
