Lords Digital Skills Committee shown supercomputers at Imperial College London
The House of Lords Digital Skills Committee has seen up close how Imperial College London are leading the way for UK research.
As part of their inquiry into digital skills and the competitiveness of the UK, the Committee visited the College, and was shown how computer simulation can tackle real life problems.
Commenting on the visit, the Committee's Chair, Baroness Morgan of Huyton, said:
“The cross-cutting nature and adaptability of the computing technology at Imperial College London was truly impressive. The team at the College demonstrated the wide-ranging real world uses for data science, from testing Formula 1 cars to water turbines. The evident industry take-up of the simulation technology reinforced how a focus on Big Data and other new technologies can push the UK one step ahead of the competition.”
Professor James Stirling CBE FRS, Provost of Imperial College London, welcomed the Digital Skills Committee. He said:
“Imperial's High Performance Computing facility enables advances in areas from aeronautics to clinical science. The facility gives researchers and students the tools to tackle global challenges in areas such as energy, the environment and healthcare. Experience with cutting-edge technologies equips our students with advanced digital skills, preparing them to become influencers and innovators in the digital economy.”
