Lords Arctic committee to ask WWF about threats to Arctic wildlife and EU about Arctic fish stocks
The House of Lords Committee on the Arctic will next week take evidence from the World Wildlife Fund on the situation of wildlife in the Arctic and threats to Arctic biodiversity.
At 10:40am on Tuesday 4 November the Committee will hear from:
- Martin Sommerkorn, Head of Conservation, WWF Global Arctic Programme
- Rod Downie, Polar Programme Manager, WWF-UK
Questions will focus on a range of topics including the areas of biodiversity in the Arctic that merit particular protection, WWF's role as the only circumpolar environmental NGO with observer status at the Arctic Council, and how the WWF works with indigenous peoples to meet its conservation aims.
At 11:40am the Committee will then take evidence from:
- Matthew King from the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Directorate General, European Commission.
In this session the Committee will focus on how climate change is affecting fish stocks in the Arctic, how Arctic fisheries should be managed and how any new regulations could be enforced as the ice retreats and fish populations move. The Committee will also ask about the wider policy of the EU towards the Arctic.
Both sessions will be in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords.
