Lords Arctic Committee to hear from Greenpeace
The House of Lords Committee on the Arctic will next Tuesday 14 October hear from three representatives of Greenpeace, as part of their investigation into the Arctic.
The Committee is looking at recent and expected changes in the Arctic and their implications for the UK and its international relations, and has been holding evidence sessions since July.
On Tuesday the Committee will take evidence from the following Greenpeace representatives:
Ben Ayliffe, Head of the International Arctic Campaign, Nathalie Rey, International Political Unit, and Charlie Kronick, Senior Climate Advisor.
They will be asked questions such as:
- How serious is the risk of a major oil spill in the Arctic, and have we learnt any lessons following disasters such as Exxon Valdez and Deep Horizon?
- Are techniques and measures in place for containing and recovering from a spill, particularly in ice covered waters?
- How would Greenpeace's proposed moratorium on drilling in the Arctic be negotiated, established and enforced?
- How effective has the Arctic Council been in ensuring that there is a balance between sustainable development and environmental protection within the Arctic?
- What steps will Greenpeace take to consult with Arctic indigenous groups when planning their Arctic campaigns?
- How effectively does the UK Government engage with Arctic issues?
The evidence session will take place in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords at 11.15am.
The session will be webcast at www.parliamentlive.tv and is also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
