How big a problem is alcohol abuse in the EU? Lords quiz experts
The House of Lords Home Affairs, Health and Education EU Sub-Committee will continue with its inquiry into the next European Union Alcohol Strategy by questioning three experts in alcohol-related issues on Wednesday 29 October.
At 10.45am, the Committee will hear from:
- Katherine Brown, Director of the Institute of Alcohol Studies;
- Dr Evelyn Gillan, Chief Executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland; and
- Professor Nick Sheron, Senior Lecturer and Head of Clinical Hepatology at the University of Southampton.
They will question the panel on issues including:
- ways in which the EU Alcohol Strategy 2006 – 2012 has influenced national policy and practice, and if they believe there should be a new one;
- the relationship between alcohol and health inequalities and any way in which an EU-wide Strategy can address these;
- if there is sufficient European data on alcohol consumption and related harm on which to base a new Strategy;
- their opinions on the gaps in evidence regarding pricing, advertising, availability and consumption, and harm caused to people other than the drinker; and
- what role, if any, the alcohol industry should play in developing and implementing the new EU Strategy.
The evidence session will take place at 10.45am, on Wednesday 29 October in Committee Room 3A of the House of Lords.
