Lords Digital Skills Committee to investigate cybersecurity and risk

On Tuesday 28 October the House of Lords Digital Skills Committee will turn their attention to cybersecurity and risk, regional hubs, and creativity, in three evidence sessions of their inquiry.

The Committee is investigating information and communications technology, competitiveness and skills in the UK, and next week will hear from cybersecurity experts, as well as representatives from regional digital hubs such as London's Tech City UK, and Skillset, the Sector Skills Council for the Creative Industries.

There will be three evidence sessions. The first, starting at 10:15am, will hear from Hugh Boyes, Cyber Security Lead, The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET); Nick Coleman, Global Head Cyber Security Intelligence, IBM Services; and Stephanie Daman, CEO Cyber Security Challenge.

They will be asked questions such as:

  • What is the security skills shortfall?
  • What is the Government's role?
  • Are those lacking security knowledge and expertise at more risk?

Then at approximately 11:15am the Committee will hear from Gary Warke, Board Member and Business Development Board Member, Humber LEP; and Gerard Grech, Chief Executive Officer, Tech City UK.

They will be asked questions about regional hubs, including:

  • How important is the digital economy to your area?
  • What role should stakeholders such as LEPs, local government and local business organisations play?
  • Can growing regional hubs help reduce inequality?
  • How can flourishing regional hubs be developed across the UK?

Finally at around 12.15pm the Committee will hear from Dinah Caine, Chief Executive Officer, Skillset (Sector Skills Council for the Creative Industries).

She will be asked questions such as:

  • How important is creativity to the digital economy?
  • How can creative industries be supported?
  • Should we be prioritising creativity and the arts in the curriculum?

The first evidence session will take place in Committee Room 2 on Tuesday 28 October, starting at approximately 10:15am, with the second starting at approximately 11:15am, and the third at around 12.15pm. The session is expected to finish at approximately 12.45pm.

The session will be webcast at www.parliamentlive.tv and is also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
