Lords to take evidence on oil, gas and mining in the Arctic

The House of Lords Committee on the Arctic will next week take evidence on mining in the region as well as the prospects for oil and gas extraction.

The evidence sessions will start at 10:40am on Tuesday 21 October in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords. Giving evidence to the Committee will be:

  • 10:40am: Dr John Campbell Technical Director, International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) and Dr Michael Engell-Jensen Executive Director, OGP
  • 11:40am: Richard Morgan Head of Government Relations, Anglo American Mining and Graeme Hossie Chief Executive, London Mining.

The first session will focus on how important Arctic oil and gas reserves are likely to be in a global context, how effective the regulatory regimes that govern hydrocarbon extraction in the region are, the risk of a major oil spill in the Arctic and the measures in place to prevent one.

In the second session questions will centre on the role the UK could and should play in the development of mining in the Arctic, what steps mining corporations take to minimise the environmental impact of their work and the response of local communities to mining work in the Arctic.

The session will be webcast at www.parliamentlive.tv and is also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
