Economic Affairs Committee to hear from Professor Danny Dorling on the problems in the UK Housing Market
The House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee will tomorrow take evidence from Professor Danny Dorling, Fellow of St Peter's College, University of Oxford and Professor Paul Cheshire, Professor of Economic Geography, London School of Economics.
The session will start at 3:30pm on Tuesday 15 December in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
Areas the session will cover include:
- Whether there is ‘overconsumption' of housing in the UK: should it be made easier for those in houses too big for their needs to downsize?
- What is the impact of immigration on the demand for housing?
- Is foreign investment in UK housing contributing to making housing unaffordable for UK citizens?
- Is the planning system an obstacle to housebuilding? What reforms would help? Should we build on parts of the greenbelt?
- Could a land value tax address problems of housing supply?
- Has the Government's ‘Help to Buy' schemes made housing more affordable?
- Should the UK introduce rent controls?
