Lords Committee investigating economic and monetary union in the EU hears from Centre for European Reform
Tomorrow, Wednesday 16 December, the House of Lords EU Committee will quiz the chief economist at the Centre for European Reform on deepening economic and monetary union in the EU.
Christian Odendahl, chief economist at the think-tank, will take questions from the Committee on issues such as convergence, financial integration and banking union, and governance reform, as part of its inquiry into EMU.
The House of Lords EU Financial Affairs Sub-Committee investigation is looking at the issue of strengthening EMU, within the context of the Five Presidents' Report.
Questions which the Committee may put to Mr. Odendahl include:
- What is your assessment of the Five Presidents' Report and the European Commission's short-term actions?
- Can the differences in policy preferences among Eurozone countries be reconciled?
- What direct or indirect impacts could the actions identified by the European Commission to complete EMU have on the UK, and other non-euro area Member States?
- Do you expect banking union to be completed by at least some form of common deposit insurance?
- How will achieving a Capital Markets Union support the completion of EMU?
- How would you assess the evolving role and growing powers of the ECB? What is the future role of the ECB in the EU's economic governance framework?
- What is your understanding of a fiscal union and what budgetary instruments should it include? Which facets of fiscal union do you consider most vital for the effective governance of the euro?
- Do the plans for governance reform take sufficient account of the need to boost growth and jobs?
The evidence session will start at 10:15am on Wednesday 16 December. It will be in Committee Room 3A of the House of Lords.
