Is there any hope for young people in the housing market? Lords to take evidence from Generation Rent, Shelter and PricedOut
The House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee will next week take evidence from Generation Rent, Shelter and PricedOut as part of its inquiry into the economics of the housing market.
The Committee will take evidence in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords from at 3:35pm on Tuesday 8 December from Betsy Dillner, Director of Generation Rent, Shelter's Director of Campaigns Toby Lloyd and Duncan Stott, Director of Priced Out.
The session will cover a range of issues including:
- how young people and others feel about the decline in home ownership and increase in private rents;
- the impact of the Government's Affordable Homes programme on the people the witnesses' organisations represent;
- how the Government can make being a private tenant a more attractive option.
The session will also touch on the apparent transition from the Government subsidising rents via social housing to subsidizing home ownership using schemes such as Help to Buy and what the impact of this might be.
At 4:30pm The Committee will also hear from Dr Peter Williams, Departmental Fellow at Cambridge Centre for Housing and Professor Steve Wilcox of the Centre for Housing Policy at the University of York
