Education Secretary and Skills Minister questioned on social mobility for school leavers

In the final evidence session of its inquiry into the social mobility in the transition from school to work, the House of Lords Select Committee on Social Mobility will question the Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP, Secretary of State for Education, on Wednesday 9 December.

She will be joined in the session by Nick Boles MP, Minister for Skills.

The Committee will explore a number of issues with the Ministers including:

  • the policy focus on the group of young people who do not do A-Levels or attend university;
  • addressing the fragmented education system and pathways through it;
  • alternative routes to employment, which are not higher education or apprenticeships;
  • funding for further education;
  • employability skills, work experience and careers education; and
  • incentives for employers (particularly SMEs) to input into guidance, and work experience.

This final session comes the week after the Rt Hon Alan Milburn, Chair of the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission, talked to the Committee about the experience of disadvantaged students in the education system. He also compared the pathway into employment via vocational education as a jungle and discussed the change in the expectations of employers for young people.

The evidence session on Wednesday 9 December will start at 10.35am and be held in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords.
