Peers to question Minister for Europe on plans for the new court rules and the conduct of EU sanctions
In a one-off evidence session with the Rt Hon David Lidington MP, Minister for Europe, members of the House of Lords EU Justice, Institutions and Consumer Protection Sub-Committee and EU External Affairs Sub-Committee will discuss the proposed redraft of the General Court's Rules of Procedure and key aspects of the EU's sanctions regime.
The session will focus on the haste with which scrutiny has been conducted, and the ramifications of the inclusion in the Court's rules, for the first time, of a proposed closed-material procedure. The Committee are concerned by the Minister's statement that the procedure shortly to be agreed by the Member States are ready to agree will “limit the types of information [the UK is] able to submit” to the General Court because of the absence of safeguards protecting the State's position.
Mr Lidington will also face questions on the adequacy of the protection of individual rights under the closed material procedure and on the safeguards for the Member States.
The evidence session will take place on Monday 2 March, at 4:05pm in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords.
