Alan Rusbridger and IPSO talk to Lords Committee about press regulation

In the second evidence session of its inquiry into press regulation, the House of Lords Communications Committee will tomorrow question the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), Alan Rusbridger, Editor of The Guardian, and Bob Satchwell, Executive Director of the Society of Editors.

In the first session, at 3.30pm, the Committee will hear from Sir Alan Moses, Chairman of IPSO, and Matt Tee, the organisation's Chief Executive Officer.

The witnesses are likely to face questions from the Committee on issues including:

  • why IPSO was established, its main aims and objectives, its current stage of development and information on the organisation's funding;
  • how IPSO plans to remain independent of the press and what its investigations process will be;
  • the reasons behind IPSO not seeking recognition under the Royal Charter; and
  • what the main differences are between IPSO and IMPRESS.

Following on, at 4.30pm, the Committee will hear from Mr Rusbridger and Mr Satchwell.

Mr Rusbridger will be questioned on issues including The Guardian's position on press regulation in the UK post-Leveson; how it handles complaints from readers; and why it has not joined IPSO.

Mr Satchwell is likely to face questions on areas including the Society of Editors support of IPSO – or otherwise; the most significant recommendations from the Leveson Report for the Society and its members; and how the local press will be impacted.

The evidence session will be held on Tuesday 20 January 2015 at 3:30pm in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords.

The session will be webcast at www.parliamentlive.tv and is also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
