Lords Committee to ask government: “will the lights go out?”
The Lords Science and Technology Committee, investigating the resilience of the electricity supply in the UK, will quiz Ed Davey MP, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, on Tuesday 20 January.
The Committee's final evidence session will ask the Government Minister if enough is being done to prevent severe blackouts in the near future.
Evidence will be heard from the Rt Hon Ed Davey MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, DECC, at 11.30am.
Questions that the Committee will ask include:
- What has the Government done to prepare for a major emergency?
- How are these plans tested?
- Is the Government confident that it has done enough to prevent severe outages, especially over the next two years?
- Who is ultimately responsible for the resilience of the electricity system?
- Is the Government on track to secure an affordable, low carbon electricity system?
- How expensive is decarbonisation going to be?
- Does the transition to a low carbon system need a so-called system architect to oversee it?
The Committee evidence session will start at 11.30am in Committee Room 4A in the House of Lords, on Tuesday 20 January.
The session will be webcast at www.parliamentlive.tv and is also open to the public. Journalists wishing to attend should go to Parliament's Cromwell Green Entrance and should allow time for security screening.
