How should we reform the way the EU is financed, Lords Committee to ask

On Tuesday, 30 June, a House of Lords Committee which deals with EU financial affairs will quiz former Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti on how EU budget funding should be reformed.

Peers will ask Mr Monti, currently Chairman of High Level Group on Own Resources, what impact any reforms will have on the rebate going to the UK and other Member States.

The Lords EU Financial Affairs Sub-Committee is looking into the system of own resources, and the EU budget more widely.

Other areas of questions will include:

  • The success so far of the High Level Group on Own Resources
  • The prospects of major reform to the system
  • The main obstacles to achieving reform
  • Whether the budgetary process is opaque, complex and undemocratic
  • The possible effects of a change to the correction mechanism on the rebate to the UK

The evidence session will start at 10.00am on Tuesday 30 June in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
