Lords Committee to examine Government's EU renegotiation plans

Who's overseeing the renegotiation for the UK? Will it be a transparent process? Will devolved governments have a say?

On Tuesday 30 June the House of Lords EU Committee will put these questions to Europe Minister David Lidington MP as part of a short preliminary inquiry into the renegotiation and referendum process. The Minister will also be asked for updates on discussions on the Mediterranean migrant situation and the Greek crisis.

Last night David Cameron initiated the process of seeking reform, ahead of a possible in-out referendum before the end of 2017. Next week's evidence session will be the first chance for a parliamentary committee to scrutinise the Government's proposals, and the process of negotiation.

Questions which the committee will ask David Lidington next week include:

  • Can you now tell us what the Government's negotiating objectives are?
  • Could you give us your view on how the summit went?
  • How will you keep Parliament informed of the progress of the renegotiation?
  • How will you keep all the other Member States involved?
  • How will you engage with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
  • What is the Government's view of the committee's Green Card mechanism for proposing new EU initiatives?
  • How do you plan to take forward the Government's Red Card initiative?
  • Can you provide an update on discussions on the Mediterranean migrant crisis at last week's Council?
  • Can you provide an update on the Greek crisis?

Following on from the evidence session, the Committee will issue a short report before the end of the parliamentary session.

The evidence session will be held at 4:10pm on Tuesday 30 June in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
