Google to give evidence to Lords inquiry into online platforms

Next week, on Monday 23 November, a Lords Committee investigating online platforms will hear from Google.

Adam Cohen, Google's head of Competition and Economy Policy for Europe, Middle East and Africa, and John Steinberg, External Relations Manager at Google for Europe, Middle East and Africa will answer questions on a range of areas including market dominance, search ranking transparency, and regulation.

The Lords EU Internal Market Sub-Committee is carrying out an inquiry examining the benefits and problems caused by online platforms, as embodied by companies such as Amazon, Google, Uber and Airbnb.

Questions which Mr Cohen and Mr Steinberg are likely to face, at 5.00pm, include:

  • If there is a strong degree of dominance in Google's Search Engine, does this lead to unfair control over access to content online?
  • What is Google's current practice for the use and storage of consumer data through its Search Engine, Gmail and through its Android platform?
  • What is your view of a kite-mark to help users recognise best practise for data protection?
  • What is your view of the idea of a ‘platform rating agency'?

The evidence session will take place from 4.15pm, on Monday 23 November in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords.
