Lords inquiry into EU Strategic Review hears perspective from Germany

The House of Lords EU Committee investigating the EU Strategic Review will take evidence from the President of the Federal Academy for Security Policy in Berlin, on Wednesday 11 November.

The evidence session, with Dr. Karl-Heinz Kamp, is part of a much wider investigation by the EU External Affairs Sub-Committee into the EU's foreign and security policy.

Dr. Kamp, a former Research Director of the NATO Defense College in Rome, was selected in 2009 to be one of the advisors on strategy to NATO's Group of Experts.

Dr. Kamp will be questioned, via video link, on a variety of areas such as NATO, EU military capacity, and German security and leadership.

He will be asked questions such as:

  • How much emphasis do you feel that NATO should be given as part of the EU's collective defence policies?
  • If the UK were to leave the EU, where would that leave EU-NATO cooperation?
  • How would a European pillar within NATO function as a way to reinvigorate EU-NATO cooperation?
  • Do you believe that Members States' promises to increase defence spending to 2% of GDP are credible?
  • Do you think the EU is likely to become a more capable military actor?
  • Can you tell us more about the German security and defence review?

The evidence session will take place at 2.30pm, on Wednesday 11 November, in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords.
