Lords Committee on Sexual Violence in Conflict to hear from African Union, United Nations and Refugee Council

The House of Lords Committee on Sexual Violence in Conflict will tomorrow take evidence from the African Union's Special Envoy for Women, Peace and Security, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons and the Women's Advocacy Manager at the Refugee Council

The evidence will be spread over two sessions on Tuesday, 10 November as follows:

10:30am (Committee Room 1) Madame Bineta Diop, Special Envoy for Women, Peace and Security, African Union (Videolink)

4:45pm  (Committee Room 3) Dr Chaloka Beyani, Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons, Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and Ms Anna Musgrave, Women's Advocacy Manger, Refugee Council

In the first session the Committee will focus on how the African Union's peace and security architecture addresses sexual violence in conflict; how the number of prosecutions for conflict related sexual violence can be increased; the African Union's role in tackling sexual violence by non-State armed groups such as Boko Haram and Al-Shaabab; and the impact of the UK Government's Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI).

The second session will see questions on the link between sexual violence,  refugee flows and international displacement; what more can be done to prevent victims of sexual violence in conflict being further victimised; and whether UK efforts to prioritise victims of sexual violence fleeing the conflict in Syria are proving effective.
