Former Deputy Supreme Nato Commander to give evidence to Lords Committee investigating EU external affairs strategy
The House of Lords EU External Affairs Sub-Committee will take evidence from experts on defence and international affairs on Thursday 29 October
As part of the Committee's investigation into the EU Strategic Review, evidence will be taken from General Sir Richard Shirreff KCB CBE, former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe; Professor Daniel Drezner, from Tufts University in the US and Dr Lars Erik Lundin, from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
The Committee is holding the evidence session as part of its inquiry into the strategic review of the EU's foreign and security policy.
The review is being carried out by the European Union's High Representative on Foreign Affairs, culminating with a new EU global strategy in 2016.
The Committee will ask the witnesses a range of questions which will include:
- Does the EU present an effective deterrent to Russia in the Baltics?
- Is the “promotion of effective multilateralism in international affairs” still a key strategic priority of the EU?
- Is the EU well aligned with the UN on security policy?
- Could the EU play a similar role to that played in Iran in a future Syrian peace process?
- How does the US view the EU as a foreign policy actor?
- How would other EU Member States – in particular France and the UK – respond to Germany becoming more assertive on EU foreign and security policy?
- Beyond Ukraine, has British leadership has been absent on foreign policy discussions in Europe?
The evidence session will take place at 10.05am, on Thursday 29 October, in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
