Dame Kate Barker, Shelter and National Housing Federation to give evidence on the built environment
Housing experts are to be asked why targets for building new homes in the UK are consistently missed, in a Lords Committee meeting on Thursday 10 September.
As well as targets, the Committee will also ask about potential use of green belt land, the merits of ‘garden cities' and the difference that local authorities can make.
Giving evidence to the Committee are Dame Kate Barker, economist; Toby Lloyd, Policy Director at Shelter; Lord Best, former Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation; and Kathleen Kelly, Assistant Director of Policy and Research at the National Housing Federation.
The Committee will put a range of questions to the witnesses, which may include:
• Why do we miss so many house building targets?
• Could re-designation of green belt land help to solve the problem?
• What are the merits of a ‘zoning' approach to house building?
• How could ‘garden cities' contribute to the solution?
• How can local authorities and social housing providers play a full role in contributing to the provision of new housing?
• What are the aspects of the current planning system that work well and less well?
The evidence session will take place at 10.10am on Thursday 10 September in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords.
