Lords to hear from live music industry on effectiveness of Licensing Act
On Tuesday 6 December, the Musicians' Union, the UK Live Music Group, and the Music Venue Trust will all give evidence to the Lords committee examining licensing legislation.
The Lords Committee on the Licensing Act 2003 is exploring the effectiveness of the Act, how it serves local communities, commerce and entertainment, and its wider impact on society.
It will turn its attention next week to live music venues, and look at the role the Licensing Act currently plays in this area.
Giving evidence to the Committee will be Paul Latham, Chair of the UK Live Music Group, Mark Davyd, Founder and chief executive of the Music Venue Trust, and Alex Mann, Regional Official, Live Performance, from the Musicians' Union.
Questions which the committee will put to the witnesses could include:
- What is your view of the effectiveness of the Licensing Act 2003 so far?
- What is your view of claims of bias in the system in favour of licensed premises against residents?
- Do live music venues use Temporary Event Notices to get around licensing conditions?
- Is there confusion around the Licensing Act 2003 and the Live Music Act 2012?
- How are larger scale venues finding the Act impacts on them?
- Could the UK learn from licensing systems in other countries?
The evidence session will start at 10.30am next Tuesday 6 December in Committee Room 3A.
