Economic experts to give evidence to Lords Committee exploring economic and monetary union within the EU
On Wednesday 13 January the House of Lords Committee currently holding an inquiry into economic and monetary union will hear from two experts in the field of international economics.
Professor Lorenzo Codogno, Visiting Professor in Practice, LSE, and Mr. Reza Moghadam, Vice Chairman in Global Capital Markets, Morgan Stanley and formerly with the IMF, will give evidence to the Lords Financial Affairs EU Sub-Committee.
The Committee's investigation is looking at the issue of strengthening EMU, within the context of the Five Presidents' Report and the subsequent European Commission Communication on the issue.
At 10.15am on Wednesday the Committee will hear from Professor Lorenzo Codogno and Mr. Reza Moghadam.
Questions which they could be asked include:
- What is your assessment of the Five Presidents' Report and the actions introduced in the short term by the European Commission on 21 October?
- What should the White Paper propose in 2017?
- How do the UK's interests differ from those of other non-euro area Member States, within the context of the Report?
- Do the report and the proposed next steps pay enough attention to non-euro area countries, such as the UK?
- What lessons can Europe learn from the US in terms of financial and budgetary integration policies?
- Is economic convergence, as emphasised by the Five Presidents' Report, necessary to build an ‘Economic Union?
- Could a Capital Markets Union complement and reinforce existing and future financial integration efforts, and in turn support the completion of EMU?
- What obstacles does the euro area face in agreeing the first stage of a European deposit insurance scheme?
The evidence session will start at 10:15am on Wednesday 13 January. It will be in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords.
