Lords Committee exploring economic and monetary union within the EU to hear from expert commentators on European economics
On Wednesday 20 January the House of Lords Committee currently holding an inquiry into economic and monetary union will explore the potential of the Five Presidents' Report with expert analysts.
The House of Lords Financial Affairs EU Sub-Committee investigation is looking at the issue of strengthening EMU, within the context of the Five Presidents' Report and the subsequent European Commission Communication.
At 10.15am on Wednesday Erik Jones, Professor of European Studies and International Political Economy at Johns Hopkins University (SAIS); Megan Greene, Chief Global Economist at Manulife Asset Management, and John Peet, Political Editor at The Economist, will all give evidence to the Committee.
Questions which they could be asked include:
- Does the report propose to do enough to strengthen the euro and its long-term sustainability?
- What do you consider to be the most significant political obstacles to achieving what is proposed in the report?
- Which facets of fiscal union do you consider most vital for the effective governance of the euro?
- Is more extensive (and, possibly, intrusive) economic and fiscal policy coordination among EU or eurozone Member States needed?
- What can the eurozone and wider EU learn from the US where capital markets play a greater role in the allocation of capital?
- What do you consider to be holding up Capital Markets Union?
- What else needs to be done to enable more effective governance of the eurozone?
The evidence session will start at 10:15am on Wednesday 20 January. It will be in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords.
