Former chief scientist to the European Commission and key university figures to give evidence to Lords Committee examining impact of EU membership on UK science

The Committee is currently carrying out an examination of the relationship between EU membership and the effectiveness of UK science, research and innovation.

The first evidence session, at 10.40am, with Professor Dame Anne Glover, former Chief Scientific Advisor to President Barroso and currently Dean for Europe at the University of Aberdeen, will cover areas such as:

• how the EU uses scientific evidence, 
• how systems of scientific advice differ between the EU and the UK,
• the influence of UK scientists at the EU level; and
• the potential scenario of the UK becoming an Associated Country.

In the second evidence session, at approximately 11.40am, on the relationship between EU membership and UK universities, the Committee will hear from Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow, President, Universities UK and Vice-Chancellor, University of Kent; Professor Sir Peter Downes, Convener of Universities Scotland and Principal & Vice-Chancellor, University of Dundee; and Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Chair of the Russell Group's EU Advisory Group and Vice-Chancellor, University of Cambridge. 

It will cover areas such as:

• the impact of EU funding on UK universities including the effect on universities in different regions,
• EU funding levels awarded to the UK in comparison to other Member States,
• the EU's freedom of movement principle; and
• university-business collaborations.
