Brexit – now what for UK science?

The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee will next week, Tuesday 19 July, hold a one-off evidence session on Brexit, and the implications for UK science.

The session is a special follow up to the report published by the Committee in April on the relationship between UK science and the EU.

While that report examined the pre-Brexit world and took the temperature of UK science within the EU, the evidence session on Tuesday will attempt to gauge the impact that the referendum vote will now have, and what needs to be done to protect the UK's interests.

On Tuesday 19 July the Committee will cover areas such as the immediate impact on UK science, what the Government needs to do to protect science in the UK, how the impact on UK science is to be evaluated, and reports of UK/EU collaborations already suffering.

The witnesses to be questioned on these areas are:

10.40am;

Professor Alexander Halliday FRS, Royal Society; the Lord Stern of Brentford, President, British Academy; and Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell DBE FRS FRSE FRAS, President, Royal Society of Edinburgh.

11:40am;

Ms Sharon Witherspoon, Policy Chief, Academy of Social Sciences; Professor Philip Nelson, Chair, Research Councils UK; and Mr Ron Mobed, Chief Executive Officer, Elsevier.

The evidence sessions will start at 10:40am on Tuesday 19 July. They will be held in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords.
