Head of Whitehall Brexit unit faces Lords questions on EU withdrawal

The Head of the Government's new Brexit unit, Oliver Letwin MP, will give evidence to the Lords EU Committee on the implications of the vote to leave the EU, on Tuesday 5 July.

David Lidington MP, the Minister for Europe and a key go-between with other EU members, will also be questioned by the Committee.

Mr Letwin will answer questions on the role of the new civil service unit set up by the Prime Minister earlier this week.

Mr Lidington will be questioned on the Government's plans for Brexit, on Article 50 (the mechanism for withdrawing from the EU), and on the status of EU nationals living and working in the UK.

It will be the first time either minister has given evidence to a parliamentary committee since the country voted to leave the EU.

The evidence session follows the European Council meetings this week, in which Prime Minster David Cameron met EU leaders to discuss the implications of the Brexit vote. It also comes in the wake of the publication by the Lords EU Committee in May of its report The process of withdrawing from the European Union.

The evidence session will start at 4.05pm on Tuesday 5 July in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
