How will Brexit affect environmental policy?
The House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on Energy and Environment will this week take evidence from senior academics on the impact of Brexit on environmental policy.
The session will start at 11am on Wednesday 20 July in Committee Room 2 of the House of Lords.
Giving evidence to the Committee will be:
- Martin Nesbit, Senior Fellow and Head of Environment and Climate Governance Programme, Institute for European Environmental Policy
- Dr Charlotte Burns, Senior Lecturer, University of York
- Professor Andrew Jordan, Professor of Environmental Science, School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia
Areas the session will cover include:
- What will be the short and long-term impacts of Brexit on environmental policy, both in the UK and in the EU?
- What role should the UK play in shaping EU environmental measures over the next two years, while it remains a member of the EU?
- What EU environmental laws might the UK continue to be bound by? To what extent should the UK seek to incorporate EU environmental law into British law?
- To what extent will the UK need to align its environmental policy with EU policy in order to maintain access to the single market?
- What progress has the UK made toward meeting EU standards for air, water quality and waste management targets?
