Instability, Islamic State and people smuggling: Lords Committee to examine political situation in Libya
On Thursday 7 July the House of Lords EU Committee will hold a one-off evidence session examining progress in Libya on establishing political authority, on the fight against ISIL and on tackling migrant smuggling.
The EU External Affairs Sub-Committee will put questions to the current UK Ambassador to Libya, Mr Peter Millett.
He will be asked a series of question, which could include:
- How would you assess the current security situation in Libya?
- What is your view of the progress being made on establishing the Government of National Accord (GNA)?
- How do you assess Western efforts (through EUBAM Libya, UNSMIL etc) to support governance building?
- How has the role of so-called ISIL changed over the last year?
- Is there potential for the growth of ISIL in Libya?
- How do Western Special Forces operations against ISIL with particular Libyan armed groups work alongside political efforts to reach a sharing of military power under the GNA?
- Do you see the extension of the EU's operation to tackle people smuggling to include arms control as conducive to stabilising the GNA's power?
- Have Western sanctions proved effective? Should they be extended?
The evidence session will start at 10.05am on Thursday 7 July in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
