Lords committee hears from charity umbrella bodies
The House of Lords Select Committee on Charities, set up to investigate the sustainability of the charity sector, will examine the relationship between the Government and the charity sector, the role of charities in community cohesion, and the financial sustainability of charities in its evidence session next week.
On Tuesday 12 July the Committee will hear from representative organisations such as ACEVO and NCVO, as well as bodies supporting charities such as the Charity Finance Group and Association of Charitable Foundations.
In the first evidence session at 4pm, the witnesses to give evidence will be Asheem Singh, CEO of ACEVO, Rebecca Bunce, Policy and Engagement Manager, Small Charities Coalition, and Karl Wilding, Director of Public Policy and Engagement, NCVO.
Among other areas, they will be asked about;
- Pressures and challenges faced by their membership;
- How funding profiles are likely to change in the future;
- The role of the Government and the Charity Commission;
- How charities are accountable to their donors and to the public; and
- Governance and trusteeship issues
Then in a later evidence session at 5pm the Committee will put questions to Andrew O'Brien, Head of Policy and Engagement, Charity Finance Group, and Richard Jenkins, Head of Policy, Association of Charitable Foundations.
They will be quizzed on a variety of issues, including:
- Income profiles of charities and how they might change;
- Ensuring sustainable funding for charities;
- Reforms to help charities improve financial sustainability;
- Achieving value for money; and
- How charities evaluate outcomes
The Committee is exploring the sustainability of, and governance issues within, the UK charity sector.
The evidence sessions will start at 4.00pm, on Tuesday 12 July, in Committee Room 4a of the House of Lords.
