Lords International Relations Committee to question Commonwealth Secretary-General

The House of Lords Committee on International Relations will next week take evidence from Baroness Scotland QC, Commonwealth Secretary-General on her priorities for the role.

Baroness Scotland was appointed Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations in April, succeeding Kamalesh Sharma who had held the position since 2008.

The evidence session will touch on a range of issues relevant to the Commonwealth and the UK's role within it, including:

  • What is the appropriate role for the Commonwealth in today's changing international context?
  • What role can the Commonwealth play in the expansion of world trade and prosperity?
  • What role can it play in upholding human rights and is there scope for greater cooperation between Commonwealth nations on security issues?
  • In light of Britain's exit from the EU will the Commonwealth become more important to UK trade and foreign policy?
  • Will the UK's exit from the EU have an impact on other Commonwealth states?
  • Is the Commonwealth likely to increase in size or welcome new associate or observer nations in the future?

The session will start at 10:30am on Wednesday 20 July in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
