Lords to question senior home office official over scrutiny failures

Tomorrow, Tuesday 10 May, the House of Lords EU Committee will ask the Permanent Secretary at the Home Office to explain his Department's failure to provide necessary information to enable proper scrutiny of its work by the Lords.

Mark Sedwill will come before the Lords EU Home Affairs Sub-Committee to explain why his Department has not fulfilled Government undertakings to provide information within set deadlines. The Committee will also ask what steps he will take to ensure better performance in future.

The committee will discuss the following issues with the Permanent Secretary:

  • The reasons for the repeated failure of the Home Office to respond to correspondence in a timely manner with the correct information.
  • The adequacy of staff resources to respond to scrutiny correspondence, and whether there is sufficient communication among officials and the Ministers.
  • Concrete steps that the Permanent Secretary will undertake to make to ensure that the Home Office will improve its performance on scrutiny.

The Committee evidence session will take place at 11.00am in Committee Room 4A, on Tuesday 10 May.
