Lords Committee on charities to explore role of local government
Representatives from local government and the LGA will answer questions from the House of Lords Select Committee on Charities next week, Tuesday 22 November.
The Committee is exploring the pressures and challenges faced by the charitable sector, as well as the roles of government and public bodies in this area.
On Tuesday the focus will be the relationship between local government and the sector.
In the Committee's first evidence session at 4.00pm the Committee will hear from Daniel Hurford, Head of Policy (Improvement and Governance), Welsh Local Government Association and Councillor Robert Light, Kirklees Council and Vice-Chair of the Local Government Association's City Regions Board.
In the second session at 5.00pm, Councillor Susan Barker, Deputy Cabinet Member for Healthy Living & Wellbeing at Essex County Council and Councillor Stephen Powers, Cabinet Member for Policy and Communications at Newcastle City Council will give evidence.
Across both evidence sessions, the Committee will want to put questions to the witnesses on issues such as:
- The relationship between local government and charities
- Compacts with the voluntary sector
- Changes in public funding to charities
- Financial pressures on charities
- Regional devolution and its impact
The evidence sessions will start at 4.00pm, on Tuesday 22 November in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords.
