Lords committee to quiz the creative, retail, education, tourism and healthcare sectors
On Thursday 3 November 2016 representatives from the UK's creative, retail, education, tourism and healthcare sectors will give evidence to the House of Lords EU Internal Market Sub-Committee.
These sessions are part of the Committee's inquiry into the implications of Brexit for the UK's trade in services with the EU. The inquiry is taking evidence from key service sectors to determine the implications of the different levels of market access the UK might negotiate with the EU.
The Committee will hear from:
At 10.10am – creative sector:
- Alice Enders, Head of Research, Enders Analysis;
- John McVay, Chief Executive, PACT (Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television); and
- Adam Minns, Executive Director, COBA (The Commercial Broadcasters Association).
At 11:10am – retail, education, tourism and healthcare sectors:
- Ray Symons, Head of EU and International Affairs, British Retail Consortium;
- Professor Sir Ian Diamond, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen, Chair of Universities UK Research Policy Network;
- Kurt Janson, Director of the Tourism Alliance; and
- Danny Mortimer, Chief Executive, NHS Employers.
Questions which the witnesses are likely to face include:
- In what ways will different parts of the broadcasting supply chain be affected by the UK's non-participation in the EU's Audio Visual Media Services (AVMS) Directive?
- To what extent has the competition provided by EU retailers with shops in the UK, such as LIDL and ALDI, been beneficial? What presence do UK retailers have in EU countries?
- What must the Government prioritise in trade negotiations with the EU to maintain the UK's research capability?
- What effect will Brexit have on tourism?
- What impact will leaving the EU have on the NHS?
The House of Lords EU Committee and its six Sub-Committees are conducting a coordinated series of short inquiries looking at the key issues that will arise in the forthcoming negotiations on Brexit. Taken as a whole, this programme of work will be the most extensive and thorough parliamentary scrutiny of Brexit.
These evidence sessions will take place at 10.10am on Thursday 3 November 2016 in Committee Room 3A of the House of Lords.
