Lords energy inquiry to hear on the latest developments in technology

On Tuesday 15 November 2016 the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee will hear evidence about the energy sector's latest technological developments.

The Committee will hear from:

At 3.35pm:

  • Hugh McNeal, Chief Executive, RenewableUK
  • Michael Liebreich, Founder, Bloomberg Energy Finance.

At 4.15pm:

  • Professor Sir Richard Friend, Cavendish Professor of Physics, University of Cambridge and co-founder of Eight 19
  • Simon Daniel, Founder and CEO of Moxia
  • George Grant, Founder and Managing Director of STAG Energy and Director of Watt Power
  • Stephen Tindale, Director, Alvin Weinberg Foundation.

This evidence session is part of the Committee's inquiry into ‘The Economics of UK Energy Policy'.

Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:

  • Will renewables ever be competitive without Government subsidy?
  • What effect does the Government's commitment to new nuclear have on renewables?
  • Is the UK Government investing sufficiently in research and development for new energy technologies?
  • How can private investment in new energy technologies be encouraged?
  • Does the UK have a particular problem developing commercially viable products from research and development?
  • Which new technologies will transform the energy sector?

The Committee is exploring the present mix of policy interventions and subsidies in the energy market. The core question which it is seeking to answer is: “What are the failures, if any, in the energy market and what measures are needed to correct them?”

The evidence session will take place at 3.35pm on Tuesday 15 November 2016 in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
