Lords to debate effects of immigration policy on overseas students
Members of the House of Lords, including Lord Green of Deddington, Chairman of MigrationWatch UK and Baroness Young of Old Scone, Chancellor of Cranfield University will this week debate the application of immigration policy to overseas students at universities and colleges.
The debate, which will be opened by Lord Lucas, will be held in the House of Lords on Thursday 17 November.Baroness Williams of Trafford, Minister of state for the Home Office, will respond on behalf of the Government.
Speaking ahead of the debate, Lord Lucas said:
“The UK's world-leading academic institutions attract global talent. They are of great benefit to society and the wider economy, building new businesses and centres of expertise here, and life-long relationships and affection overseas. At this moment, when we are turning our face to the world, they are a vital part of our future prosperity as well as a strong contributor to our balance of trade.
“As UK immigration policy is tightened, I am hoping for lots of constructive suggestions as to how the government can achieve its legitimate objectives while enhancing the prosperity and reputation that our education system brings us.”
