What does Nissan decision mean for UK car manufacturers? Lords committee asks
On Thursday 3 November, the Lords EU Committee looks at the implications of the Nissan decision for post-Brexit trade with the UK, among other issues.
The House of Lords EU External Affairs Sub-Committee is investigating future trade in goods between the UK and the EU.
On Thursday, representatives from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, as well as the Royal Aeronautical Society, and ADS Group (Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space), will give evidence.
At 10.05am the Committee will hear from Mr Mike Hawes, CEO of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. He will be asked questions such as:
- What is your view of the news about Nissan, in relation to the Government's reported assurances to the car maker?
- Would you argue that all UK car manufacturers should get the same promise?
- How would you expect tariffs imposed on UK-EU trade to affect the industry and its supply chain?
- What would you expect to be the impact of the depreciation of the pound on the industry?
- What would be the benefits, what would be the disadvantages (particularly to trade), of replacing EU standards in the UK post-Brexit?
Then at 11.15am the Committee will hear from Mr Simon Whalley, Head of External Affairs, Royal Aeronautical Society, and Mr Paul Everitt, Chief Executive Officer, ADS Group.
As well as some of the questions above, they might also be asked:
- What impact will Brexit have on UK companies' access to EU-funded contracts in the European Space Agency's programmes such as Galileo and Copernicus?
- How important would it be to maintain common operating and technical product standards (for example safety standards and type-certifying for aircraft parts as articulated by EASA)?
These evidence sessions will take place at 10.05am and 11.15am on Thursday 3 November in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
