How should UK policy adapt to a new Middle East, Lords ask
On Wednesday 12 October the House of Lords Committee on International Relations will hold its first evidence session on its new inquiry on trends in the Middle East and the implications for UK policy.
The Committee will hear from Sir Derek Plumbly, former British Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon.
He will be questioned about existing UK policy in the Middle East, how policy should reflect developments in the region, and whether Brexit will have any impact.
Questions the Committee will ask on Wednesday could be:
- What are the strengths and weaknesses of UK policy in the Middle East?
- What do you consider to be the most significant political, economic and geopolitical trends in the region?
- How should UK policy react and respond to these trends?
- Do you think Brexit will have any impact on UK policy in the area? And to what extent?
- What is your view of the rise in the influence of China in the region?
- In the long-term, how significant will Iran and Saudi Arabia's relations be for the region?
The session will start at 11:30am on Wednesday 12 October and be held in Committee Room 3A of the House of Lords.
