How will Brexit affect UK trade in goods?
On Thursday 27 October, the Lords EU Committee investigation into the UK's trade in goods post-Brexit looks at the significance of EU membership for the food and beverage, and oil and petroleum industries.
The House of Lords EU External Affairs Sub-Committee will ask industry experts and commentators how leaving the EU will impact the UK in relation to tariff barriers, quotas, the Common Agricultural Policy, and Free Trade Agreements, among others.
At 10.05am the Committee will hear evidence from Prof. Tim Lang, Centre for Food Policy, at City, University of London, and Mr Peter Hardwick, Head of Exports, at the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board.
Then at 11.15am the Committee will hear from Mr Michael Tholen, Director of Upstream Policy, at Oil & Gas UK, and Mr Chris Hunt, Director General, at the UK Petroleum Industry Association.
Questions which the witnesses are likely to face include:
- How important is trade with the EU for your industry?
- If tariff barriers were imposed between the UK and the EU, how would this have an impact?
- What would be the implications to the industry of changes to standards, such as licensing, certification, and labelling?
- Would it be beneficial for the industry to continue with EU rules and regulations?
- How is your industry being affected by the weak pound?
- How important is continued or equivalent access to the EU's Free Trade Agreements with third countries?

- What is the importance of EU tariff rate quotas to the UK industry?
These evidence sessions will take place at 10.05am and 11.15am on Thursday 27 October in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
