Lords Licensing Act Committee asks pubs, hotels and small businesses for views on regulation
The House of Lords Licensing Act 2003 Committee will hear from the pub trade, licensed retailers and beer campaigners, on Tuesday 18 October.
The British Beer and Pub Association, Punch Taverns, the Society of Independent Brewers, and the Campaign for Real Ale are among those who will be giving evidence. Also appearing as witnesses will be representatives from the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers and the British Hospitality Association.
At 10:40am the Committee will hear from Mr Tim Page, Chief Executive of the Campaign for Real Ale, Mr Robert Humphreys, non-executive Director of the Society of Independent Brewers, and Mr Stuart Gallyot, Company Secretary and Director of Legal & Estates at Punch Taverns.
Then at 11:30am the Committee will hear from Ms Brigid Simmonds, Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, Mrs Kate Nicholls, Chief Executive of the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers, and Mr Vernon Hunte, Government Affairs Director at the British Hospitality Association.
The witnesses will be asked a variety of questions, which could include:
- How does the licensing system work, from your perspective?
- What are the biggest problems that you encounter?
- Are licensing sub-committees fair? Or does politics colour their decisions?
- How have you found the appeal system?
- What is your view of the ‘Group review intervention power', allowing for conditions to be laid down?
- Do you think alcohol should be regulated by taxation or minimum pricing?
The evidence sessions will take start 10.40am next Tuesday 18 October in Committee Room 3A.
