Lords to quiz ministers on plans for police and security co-operation post Brexit

This session provides an opportunity for the Committee to examine further what aspects of UK-EU police and security co-operation it may be desirable to sustain after Brexit and what strategies both the Home Office and the Department for Exiting the European Union have in place to ensure UK interests are protected. This will include what relationship with Europol and Eurojust the Government plans to negotiate for the UK, as well as proposed alternatives to EU databases should access be lost.

The House of Lords EU Committee and its six Sub-Committees are conducting a coordinated series of short inquiries looking at the key issues that will arise in the forthcoming negotiations on Brexit. Taken as a whole, this programme of work will be the most extensive and thorough parliamentary scrutiny of Brexit.

At 10:30am the Committee will hear evidence from:

• Brandon Lewis MP, Minister of State, Home Office
• David Jones MP, Minister of State, Department for Exiting the European Union

The Committee is likely to ask:

• What are the options for the UK's relationship with Europol post-Brexit?
• What are the options for replacing the European Arrest Warrant?
• What is the process being followed within Government in formulating the UK's negotiating objectives in this area?
• To what extent can we learn from other countries such as the US as we consider how best to exert influence from outside the bloc?
•  How might Brexit affect the UK's ability to promote and advance its own policy agenda on police and security matters with European partners?

The evidence sessions will take place at 10:30am on Wednesday 19 October in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
