Lords International Relations Committee to hear from Foreign Office Minister
On Monday 12 September, the House of Lords Committee on International Relations will continue its inquiry into UK priorities for the new UN Secretary-General with evidence from Baroness Anelay, Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
She will be asked about some of the main challenges facing the UN such as peacekeeping, human rights, migration and also the implications of Brexit.
The UN will later this year elect a new Secretary-General who will formally take up their position in 2017. The House of Lords International Relations Committee, established in May, is holding an inquiry into the UK's priorities for the new Secretary-General.
In its second evidence session, on Monday 12 September, the Committee will take evidence from Baroness Anelay of St. Johns, Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Questions which could be asked include:
- What updates can you give us on the UN peacekeeping summit held recently in London?
- Could the UK add value to UN peacekeeping by taking on a ‘stand-by' role?
- How could the UN's conflict prevention work be improved?
- How could the UK improve the work of the Human Rights Council, assuming it gets re-elected?
- Ahead of the UN General Assembly summit on migration, what should be on the UK list of things to push for?
- How much reform of the UN should the new Secretary-General get involved in?
- What, if any, impact do you think Brexit may have on other members of the Commonwealth?
The evidence session will be on Monday 12 September at 2:30pm in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
