What are the risks to children from the internet?
The House of Lords Communications Committee continues its inquiry into the impact of the internet on children, tomorrow, Tuesday 13 September.
The investigation is looking into the risks and dangers presented to children by the internet, as well as the benefits, and also online governance and regulation.
The Committee will hear from representatives of children's charities, and experts in the field of internet crime prevention.
In the first evidence session at 3.30pm the Committee will hear from Dr Julia Fossi, Head of Child Online Safety at the NSPCC, and Vicki Shotbolt, Founder and CEO of Parent Zone.
Then at 4.30pm Susie Hargreaves OBE, CEO, Internet Watch Foundation and Dr Jamie Saunders, Director of the National Cyber Crime Unit, National Crime Agency, will give evidence to the Committee.
Questions which the Committee will ask could include:
- Are the risks – e.g. from bullying and from pornography – different when comparing online and offline risks?
- Will new technologies increase the risk of exposure to online abuse?
- Is the current legislation effective in this area?
- Are young people aware of the risks when it comes to protecting their data?
- What more should the industry do to protect children?
- What more could parents do to protect their children from online crime?
The Committee will hold its evidence sessions from 3.30pm on Tuesday 13 September in the House of Lords Committee Room 2.
