Lords to debate report on potential UK-EU security treaty
The House of Lords will tomorrow debate the EU Home Affairs Sub-Committee's report on Brexit: the proposed UK-EU security treaty.
The debate is being moved by Lord Jay of Ewelme the Chairman of the Committee and Baroness Williams of Trafford will respond on behalf of the Government.
The debate is expected to begin at around 5:00pm.
The report emphasised that the UK and the EU share a deep interest in maintaining the closest possible police and security cooperation after Brexit and that protecting the safety of millions of UK and EU citizens must be the over-riding objective. The report further stressed that negotiations on security are not a ‘zero sum game': the UK and the EU both stand to gain from agreement, and to lose if negotiations fail.
The Committee recommended that, if a comprehensive treaty could not be agreed, a series of ad hoc security arrangements could help to ensure the level of cooperation needed in the future UK-EU security relationship.
